    Model gufm1 (See Jackson et al. (2000) - Four centuries of geomagnetic secular variation from historical records, Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. A (2000) Vol. 358, pp957-99) provides our most complete picture of the evolution of the geomagnetic field, both at Earth's surface and at the core surface from 1590 to 1990. Below you can find downlaods of the field model and animations of various components of the field over this period. It should be noted that since no intensity data is available prior to 1840, the axial dipole component is linearly extrapolated back before this date.

    Animations of gufm1 field evolution

    All animations are available in animated .gif files which can be viewed using both netscape and internet explorer, but are slow to download, as well as quicktime .mov files, though these require a quicktime viewer. Animations constructed using the analysis of Finlay and Jackson (Science Volume 300, pp. 2084-2086) are also provided, along with animations of the Bres field used in this study both at the core surface and at Earth's surface, using more familiar contouring and colour schemes . Finally there is an animation of the downward continuation of Bz through the mantle to the core surface (in 1980) courtesy of Steve Gibbons.
